April Showers Bring May Flowers

April Showers Bring May Flowers

With Spring finally making its 2023 entrance and the cold (hopefully) a thing of the past, it’s a green thumb’s favourite time of year. With the crocus’ starting to peek out and the weather wet and dreary, let’s look at what to plant this time of year for colourful coming months!

For flowers, look at annuals and perennials; Pansies, calendulas, and marigolds are all perfect annual seeds to sow for a vibrant garden in the coming months. For perennials that’ll come back year after year, try lavender, chrysanthemums, fox-glove, and plant-life-friendly yarrow.

For vegetables, April is a great time to directly sow seeds of beets, carrots, parsnips, spinach, peas, and turnips. You can also prep veggies for transplanting indoors in preparation for the warmer months to come, such as basil, peppers, melons, and tomatoes.

Finally, for fruits, April is prime berry season: Blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries are great to get in the ground this spring. Stick with small fruits in the earlier spring months, before going for big ones like melons.

As always, check out your garden and soil beforehand and plan out what you want to do with it; A flower and butterfly garden? Hardy vegetable garden for yummy spring and summer hauls to the kitchen? A simple herb garden? Whatever you choose, make sure to do your research and get the right plants for you!
