Getting Started In The Garden

May is when Waterloo truly wakes up. The last traces of winter fade, the soil softens, and suddenly your yard feels full of possibility again. Whether you’re working with a spacious backyard, a small patio, or even just a balcony, this is the month where everything green begins.

There’s something grounding about getting your hands into the earth after a long Ontario winter. Gardening in May isn’t just about plants, it’s about resetting your routine, spending more time outside, and creating a space that feels like an extension of your home.

Start with the Soil

Before planting anything, take a little time to prep your soil. After months of cold and snow, it likely needs some attention. Turn it over, remove any debris, and mix in compost or organic matter. Healthy soil makes everything else easier and your plants will thank you for it. If you’ve got ideas for specific plants, check and see what fertilizers are recommended and keep in mind things such as ph.

If you’re not sure where to begin, start small. Even a single garden bed or a few containers can bring a lot of life to your outdoor space. For those with little space, even one or two planters can completely liven up a space.

What to Plant in May

In Waterloo’s climate, May is ideal for planting a mix of hardy vegetables and early flowers. Cool-season crops like lettuce, spinach, peas, and radishes thrive right now. Toward the end of the month, you can start introducing tomatoes, peppers, and herbs once the risk of frost has passed.

For flowers, think colour and resilience. Marigolds, petunias, and pansies are all great options that add instant brightness and are relatively low maintenance.

If you prefer something that comes back year after year, consider adding perennials like hostas or daylilies. They’re dependable and perfect for building a garden that evolves over time.

Container Gardening for Any Space

Not everyone has a large yard!  Container gardening is a great way to bring greenery to patios, balconies, or even a sunny windowsill.

Mix herbs like basil, mint, and chives in a single planter, or create a simple arrangement of flowers for a pop of colour near your front door. Containers are flexible, easy to maintain, and perfect if you like to change things up throughout the season. Try a cute pot or even some hanging macrame!

Make It a Space You’ll Actually Use

Gardening isn’t just about planting, it’s about creating a place you want to spend time in. Add a chair, a small table, or even just a cozy corner where you can enjoy your morning coffee.

String lights, outdoor cushions, or a simple pathway can transform your yard into a relaxing retreat. The goal isn’t perfection, but comfort.

Keep It Simple

It’s easy to feel like you need to do everything at once, but gardening doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start with a few plants you genuinely like. Water them regularly, pay attention to how they grow, and adjust as you go.

Some things will thrive, others might not, and that’s part of the process. Every season teaches you something new.

A Fresh Season Ahead

May is a reminder that growth doesn’t have to be complicated. A few seeds, a bit of sunshine, and a little care can completely transform a space (and your mindset along with it).

So open the windows, step outside, and start small. Your garden doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to begin.
