A Brisk Transition

A Brisk Transition

As the warm summer air gives way to chillier days here in Waterloo Region, it’s time to get your home ready for the seasons ahead. Fall and Winter in Southern Ontario can be beautiful, but it also brings snow, brisk winds, and some challenges. Whether you’re settling into your forever home or getting your house ready to sell, a little bit of cold-weather prep can go a long way.

Let’s walk through some friendly reminders and helpful tips to keep your home cozy, safe, and running smoothly as temperatures drop.

  1. Check Your Furnace Before You Really Need It

Before the real chill sets in, test your furnace. Turn it on to make sure it’s blowing warm air and that the thermostat responds properly.

  1. Protect Your Pipes from Freezing

Frozen pipes are a Canadian homeowner’s nightmare. To prevent costly repairs:

  • Insulate pipes in unheated areas (like basements and crawl spaces).

  • Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses.

  • Turn off and drain outdoor water taps before the first hard frost.

Tip: If you're heading out of town for a few days, keep the heat on (minimum 13°C) and open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate.

  1. Seal the Drafts

Check around windows and doors for drafts and seal any gaps with weatherstripping or caulking. Even small leaks can lead to heat loss and higher hydro bills.

Tip: If you feel a breeze on a windy day while standing near a window, it’s time to seal it up!

  1. Clean Those Gutters

Falling leaves are beautiful, but not in your gutters. Clogged eavestroughs can cause water to back up and freeze, leading to ice dams and roof damage.

Safety First: If you're not comfortable on a ladder, hire a professional to clear your gutters before the snow flies.

  1. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Cold weather means more time indoors and, as such, more reliance on heating systems, fireplaces, and space heaters.

Checklist:

  • Test detectors monthly.

  • Replace batteries at least once a year.

  • Make sure you have one on every level of your home.

  1. Prep for Snow and Ice

Get ahead of the snowfall by stocking up on:

  • Salt or eco-friendly ice melt

  • Snow shovels or a snowblower

  • Car scrapers and emergency kits

Reminder: Shovelling your sidewalk isn’t just courteous: it’s required in many areas of Waterloo Region. Let’s keep our community safe and walkable!

  1. Roof Check

Snow and ice can be tough on your roof. Make sure shingles are in good shape!

Thinking of Selling? A well-maintained roof is a major selling point + avoids surprises during a buyer’s inspection.

  1. Cozy Up the Vibe

Lastly, add some warmth to your home; literally and figuratively. Think cozy throws, warm lighting, and a batch of hot cocoa. Stay warm, Waterloo!
